I’m going to need you to render one object subivided into about 2 million or so polygons. Before that, we need to experiment with shaders in the real time rendering preview a bit, then we’ll be rendering the final image for about 12-16 hours with about 500 tiles, 5k-10k samples per tile.

Best have a workstation bro, at least 8GB of vRAM and 32GB of system RAM. And at bare minimum a quad-core processor with some SMT.

The good news is that you could probably spring for a new motherboard and CPU (maybe a cheap SSD), then just move the graphics card and old hard drive over, then see if you can upgrade your Windows Vista key to 7 or 8. That would give you a huge boost for a minimal amount of money.

Eh, Vista is fine with SP2. It’s a slightly less efficient Windows 7.

It’s the 32-bit that is fucking horrifying. With 4GB of system RAM and over 2GB of vRAM, his OS has to swap between memory and his hard drive at an alarming rate. Hid HDD must get the thrashing of its life.
